What Is Parent & Family Coaching?

Family relationships can be some of the most meaningful relationships in our lives and some of the most complicated.

You may love each other deeply and still find yourselves having the same arguments, walking on eggshells, struggling with boundaries, or falling into roles that have been in place for years.

Parent and family coaching helps you understand the patterns underneath those dynamics and what each person may be bringing to them.

We look at triggers, communication, expectations, boundaries, resentment, over-functioning, and the roles people have learned to play within the family.

You don’t need your entire family to participate for things to change.

When one person begins responding differently, it can shift the dynamic for everyone.

Where You May Feel Stuck

Do Any of These Sound Familiar?

Family relationships can bring out some of our deepest patterns. Here are some of the ways that can show up.

You Keep Having the Same Conflicts

The subject may change, but somehow you keep ending up in the same argument, hurt feelings, or standoff.

You’re Walking on Eggshells

You’re constantly thinking about what to say, what not to say, or how someone in the family might react.

Boundaries Feel Complicated

You want to be loving and supportive without feeling responsible for everyone else’s feelings, choices, or problems.

You’re Over-Functioning

You’re the one fixing, helping, worrying, reminding, mediating, or trying to hold the family together, and it’s exhausting.

Your Relationship Has Changed

Your child is becoming an adult, your parents are aging, or your family is going through a change and the old way of relating no longer works.

You Feel Hurt or Disconnected

You love each other, but resentment, disappointment, conflict, or years of misunderstanding have created distance.

I Had to Learn How to Be the Parent I Wanted to Be

I didn’t grow up with great role models for close family relationships. In my family, very little was talked about or shared, and feelings weren’t something that were really nurtured.

So when I decided to have children, I was determined to do things differently.

I put a lot of effort into learning how to be a good parent. I read, took classes, watched other families, and sought out hands-on training. And for a while, I thought I had gotten pretty good at it.

Then I got divorced, my two boys became strong-willed, fiercely independent teenagers, and what had worked before stopped working.

I realized that if I wanted to maintain close relationships with them, my parenting had to change. I had to move from managing and directing their lives to mentoring them, listening differently, and becoming more curious about who they were becoming rather than who I thought they should be.

That shift changed my relationships with my sons and changed the way I think about parenting.

Along the way, I’ve also navigated co-parenting with an ex, extended family relationships, and the ongoing changes that happen as children become adults and family roles evolve.

Today, those experiences are an important part of how I work with parents and families. I know how easy it is to love someone deeply and still get caught in patterns that create conflict or distance. And I know that sometimes creating a healthier family relationship starts with changing how we show up in it.

What Working Together Looks Like

Clarity Call

We start with a free 30-minute conversation about what’s happening in your family, what you’d like help with, and whether working together feels like the right fit.

Your Starting Point

Before we begin, you’ll complete a questionnaire that gives me a fuller picture of the family dynamic, what’s been happening, what you’ve already tried, and what you’d like to change.

Coaching That Fits Your Family

I may work with you individually, with a parent and child, siblings, or other family members depending on the situation. You can work with me session by session or choose a 12-session package for deeper, ongoing work.

What Changes When You Do This Work

The goal isn’t to create a family that never disagrees.

It’s to change the patterns that turn normal differences into conflict, resentment, distance, or disconnection.

  • You understand what’s underneath the conflict instead of getting stuck on what was said or done.
  • You recognize your own triggers and learn how to respond instead of automatically reacting.
  • You communicate more directly instead of avoiding, exploding, rescuing, or shutting down.
  • You set healthier boundaries without feeling responsible for everyone else’s reaction.
  • You stop over-functioning and allow other family members to take responsibility for themselves.
  • You create more room for honesty, connection, and healthier relationships within your family.

Common Questions

Questions About Parent & Family Coaching

Find answers to the questions I’m most often asked about coaching.

Still have a question? Get in touch.
What does a parent and family coach help with?

I help parents and family members understand the patterns underneath conflict, disconnection, boundary problems, and recurring family dynamics. We look at what’s triggering each person, what keeps the pattern going, and what you can do differently to create a healthier relationship.

Do other members of my family need to participate?

No. I often work with one person who wants to change a family dynamic. You can’t control how another person behaves, but changing the way you respond can have a significant impact on the relationship.

Can you help me with my relationship with my adult child?

Yes. Relationships often need to change as children become adults. I can help you navigate boundaries, communication, expectations, conflict, and how to stay connected while allowing your adult child to have their own life.

Do you work with parents and teenagers?

Yes. Depending on the situation, I may work with a parent individually, a teen or young adult, or family members together. We’ll determine what makes the most sense during the Clarity Call.

Can family coaching help with difficult parents or siblings?

Yes. Family coaching isn’t limited to parenting. I work with adults navigating relationships with parents, siblings, adult children, and other family members, particularly when old roles, expectations, guilt, resentment, or boundaries are creating problems.

What is the difference between family coaching and family therapy?

Family therapy is a mental health service that can diagnose and treat mental health conditions. My coaching work is focused on understanding current patterns, changing how you respond, improving communication and boundaries, and helping you create healthier ways of relating. Coaching is not a substitute for mental health treatment when therapy is needed.
