When You Love Each Other but Keep Getting Stuck

You may still love each other deeply but find yourselves having the same arguments, feeling emotionally distant, or missing the closeness you once had.

Couples coaching helps you understand what is happening beneath those patterns so you can communicate differently, rebuild trust, and create a stronger connection.

Rather than focusing only on communication techniques, we look at what each of you is bringing into the dynamic, including the triggers, beliefs, protective reactions, and old patterns that keep pulling you back into the same cycle.

Inescapable Vulnerability of Childhood
Where You May Feel Stuck

Do Any of These Sound Familiar?

Relationships can be one of the most rewarding parts of life, and also one of the most challenging. Here are some of the ways that can show up.

Same Fight Over & Over

You keep ending up in the same argument, even when the topic changes.

Getting Defensive

Conversations quickly turn into explaining, blaming, shutting down, or trying to prove your point.

Avoiding Conflict

You keep the peace, over give, or say yes when you really want to say no.

Feeling Disconnected

You care about each other, but the closeness, warmth, or understanding feels harder to reach.

Feeling Alone Together

You may be questioning the relationship, feeling lonely in it, or wondering what needs to change.

Triggered & Reacting

Certain moments hit a nerve and you react in ways you later regret or do not fully understand.

I Wanted to Learn How to Do Relationship Differently

I was in a long-term marriage, and together we raised two amazing boys. We parented well, managed busy schedules, traveled all over the world, and built a very good life together.

But over time, we slowly lost the love, intimacy, and connection between us.

Our divorce was very amicable, but afterward I knew I wanted to understand how to be in relationship differently. I took a deep dive into learning what creates lasting intimacy, emotional connection, trust, play, and fun between two people.

I eventually remarried, and I am now in a completely different kind of relationship.

We still have disagreements. We still navigate stress, change, and the ups and downs of life. But there is a very different level of closeness, intimacy, honesty, playfulness, and connection.

That personal journey, along with years of training and working with individuals and couples, deeply informs the way I coach today. I know how easy it is for two good people to slowly lose each other, and I also know that relationships can change when both people begin to understand themselves and each other differently.

My approach is warm, compassionate, and direct. I help couples see the patterns they may not be able to see on their own, understand what is happening beneath their reactions, and create a relationship that feels more connected, honest, and alive.

Understand the Pattern

We identify the cycle the two of you keep getting pulled into and what each of you tends to do when you feel hurt, misunderstood, criticized, rejected, or disconnected.

Understand What’s Underneath It

We look beneath the argument itself to the deeper fears, needs, beliefs, and triggers driving each person’s reactions.

Learn to Respond Differently

You begin practicing ways to communicate more honestly, listen without immediately defending, and stay connected even when something difficult comes up.

Create a Different Relationship

As the pattern begins to change, you can rebuild trust, closeness, respect, and a stronger sense that you are actually on the same team.

Common Questions

Common Questions About Couples Coaching

Find answers to the questions I’m most often asked about coaching.

Still have a question? Get in touch.

What does a couples coach do?
A couples coach helps you understand the patterns that keep creating conflict or disconnection in your relationship and learn how to respond to each other differently.

In my work with couples, we look beneath the argument itself at the triggers, beliefs, fears, and protective reactions that may be keeping the same dynamic going. I also encourage couples to move away from arguing about who is right and toward understanding what is really happening between you.

The goal is not to decide who is right or wrong. It is to help both of you understand what is happening between you, communicate more honestly, and create more trust, intimacy, and connection.

Why do we keep having the same argument over and over?

Couples often repeat the same argument over and over because the real issue is not always the subject they are arguing about. Underneath the disagreement may be deeper feelings such as not feeling heard, valued, respected, important, safe, or understood.

When you begin to recognize the pattern underneath the fight, you can interrupt it instead of automatically repeating it. Couples coaching can help each of you understand your triggers and reactions so the conversation can begin to change.

Can couples coaching help if we love each other but feel disconnected?

Yes. Feeling disconnected from your partner does not necessarily mean the love is gone. Couples can care deeply about each other and still gradually lose emotional closeness, intimacy, affection, playfulness, or a sense of being on the same team.

Couples coaching can help you understand what contributed to that distance and begin creating new ways of connecting, communicating, and showing up for each other.

What if my partner doesn’t want to do couples coaching?
It is common for one partner to feel more hesitant about couples coaching than the other. Sometimes one partner is more ready to work on the relationship, while the other may worry about being blamed, judged, pressured to change, or having someone take sides.

My role is not to determine who is the problem. I help both people understand the pattern they are creating together and what each person can do differently.

Sometimes simply having a Clarity Call can help a hesitant partner better understand what the process would actually be like.

Can couples coaching help us rebuild trust?
Couples coaching can help when trust has been weakened by repeated disappointment, defensiveness, emotional distance, poor communication, or patterns that have left one or both partners feeling disconnected.

Rebuilding trust usually involves more than simply promising to do things differently. We look at what damaged the sense of trust, what each partner needs in order to feel safer and more connected, and what consistent changes can help create a different experience of the relationship. This can also include learning how to repair after an argument, reconnect when emotions have settled, and avoid reopening the same conflict.

What is the difference between couples coaching and couples therapy?
Couples coaching and couples therapy can both help people improve their relationships, but they have different scopes.
Couples coaching focuses on identifying relationship patterns, clarifying what you want to change, developing new ways of communicating and responding, and creating forward movement in the relationship.

Therapy is provided by a licensed mental health professional and can diagnose and treat mental health conditions and provide clinical treatment when that is needed.

My work often goes beneath surface-level communication to help you recognize the beliefs, triggers, and protective patterns affecting how you relate to each other, while remaining within the scope of coaching.

Can couples coaching help if one of us is unsure about the relationship?
Couples coaching can provide a place to explore what is creating the uncertainty without forcing either person toward a particular decision.

Sometimes uncertainty comes from years of disconnection, unresolved resentment, repeated conflict, or needs that have not been expressed clearly.

Understanding what is underneath the uncertainty can help both partners get clearer about what they want and whether they are willing to create something different together.

Do you ever meet with partners individually during couples coaching?
Yes. There may be times when meeting individually is useful, depending on what is happening in the relationship and what would best support the work.

The overall purpose remains helping the relationship move forward. I am clear about confidentiality and expectations so both partners understand how individual conversations fit within the couples coaching process.

How do we know if couples coaching is right for us?
Couples coaching may be a good fit if you care about the relationship and want something to change, but have had difficulty changing the pattern on your own.

You might be having the same arguments repeatedly, feeling emotionally disconnected, struggling to communicate without becoming defensive, avoiding important conversations, or simply missing the closeness you once had.

A free 30-minute Clarity Call gives us an opportunity to talk about what is happening and determine whether working together feels like the right fit.
